About

LA.LLand is the architecture and studio practice of Rachel Shillander R.A CAB AIA, known for her 2020 Disco Chair. Born, raised and currently located in the San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles, California. The practice spans buildings, furniture, lighting, hardware, and objects. Her work explores domestic design, construction, and building technology, transforming architectural ideas into tangible forms. Through the objectification of architectural ideas the studio uses familiar materials and traditional building systems to examine ethics, nostalgia, place, time, and the complexities of human relationships. The result is a body of work that bridges theory and tactility—semi-functional maquettes and full-scale constructions that make abstract concepts physically accessible.

Our work blurs the boundaries between structure and experience, crafting timeless homes that are deeply attuned to the context of where they are built and the individuals who inhabit them, from fire-resistant case study homes designed in response to the recent Los Angeles fires to monolithic furnishings clad in mirror and stone. Each project is a dialogue between material, emotion, and personal narrative, ensuring that every space is not only a reflection of place but also of the people who call it home. We embrace efficiency without sacrificing imagination, employing both vernacular and high-performance materials to craft spaces that are at once grounded and otherworldly.

Our practice is deeply influenced by the context, layered histories, and cultural landscapes of the places where we design. Whether in Los Angeles, or beyond, we engage with the vernacular traditions, material innovations, and ephemeral qualities unique to each region. Architecture is an ongoing conversation between past and future, shaped by the forces of memory, technology, and cultural evolution. We design with an awareness that spaces are not static—they transform through time and experience, shaped by the lives of the people who inhabit them, both physically and metaphorically. Our approach embraces this fluidity, crafting designs that honor history while remaining adaptable to the ever-changing needs of domestic space.

  • Copper is a "live" material. Raw copper lights will age over a varied amount of time depending on the environment where they are placed, and how often they are touched. Exposure to moisture, salt, and light cause the copper to patina. Copper will show all the marks of fabrication, handling, and wear; turning from a shiny new penny to dark brown and eventually verdigris.

  • Verdigris Lamps come pre-patinated. Though pre-finished, the lamps are NOT sealed. They may shed with wear, and will continue to patina over time.

  • Lamps come wired with cast bronze and copper lamp parts, with transparent silver 18/2 cord sets and keyed stepless diming at the socket. For custom wiring, please contact the studio.

  • Lamps are meant to provide mood lighting. The interior surface of the shades are left raw copper, for a soft warm glow.
